Durham Fire Station 3

Our playgroup from church organized an outing to a local Fire Station.  They told us about the area they service and what kind of calls they usually get.  While they were talking to us they got a call and had to go.  We waited around for about 20-30 minutes and they came back to finish the tour.

These large tubes are used to vent the exhaust from the trucks outside.

Eliza with a couple kids while waiting for the firemen to come back.

This Fire Station is one of two in Durham that qualified to respond as HazMat.

The firemen returning.

One of the firemen put on his whole uniform so the kids could see what they look like, so hopefully they wouldn't be scared when they see them.

The kids were still a little nervous then he was in his full uniform.

The kids got to climb into the back of the truck.

They also got junior firemen hats.

Gotta love these two!

We also got to tour the fire house.  This is one of their private rooms.

The kitchen where they make all their food.

Dinner table.

Game room.

Weight room.

They have to work out at the station since there is no gym in their assigned area. They have cleaning checks for each day of the week, so they stay pretty busy.  They said that the majority of their calls are to EMS calls and not fires.  It was a lot of fun to see the fire truck and the station up close and to get a glimpse into the lives of the brave Firemen that help keep our community safe!  Thanks guys!

Happy Halloween

This year our ward Halloween Party was on Saturday Oct. 29, 2001.  It was a lot of fun and their were a lot of people that participated.

Daniel with his other Spider Man buddies.

Andy and I dressed as Salt and Pepper.  To bad we never got a picture together.
The kids had a lot of fun painting pumpkins provided by the primary.

One of the sisters in our ward decorated her car like a monster.  I am going to have to remember this for in the future.

Eliza got a little tired at the party, but her Dad snuggled her when we got home.
She is definitely Daddy's little girl.

Last Thursday Bradley was supposed to dress like his favorite super hero or role model.  I told him he needed to dress like a really person that he looked up to.  He decided to dress like his Dad.  He told everyone at school that his Dad was in the United States Air Force.  Then when Halloween came around he decided not to dress like Buzz Lightyear as he had originally planned, but to dress like Dad again.

Eliza dressed like Strawberry Shortcake.  She loves all her candy.

Poor Daniel started not feeling well on Sunday and didn't feel well enough to go around the cul-de-sac on Halloween night.  He is still a little under the weather but we have our fingers crossed that no one else catches it.

Carving Pumpkins

The kids were excited to carve to pumpkins.  We had to talk them into waiting for our neighbor to get home so they could join us.

Bradley liked the pumpkin Eliza picked out for him.

Daniel LOVES his pumpkin.

Bradley digging out the pumpkin guts.  He still thinks it is gross!
Last year the boys both said "ooh" each time they stuck their hands in the pumpkin.  This year Bradley was the only one I could get to clean out the pumpkin.

Daniel refused to help clean out the pumpkins.  "Ooh!"

Dad on the other hand thought the pumpkin looked tasty!

Eliza just wanted to help with everything.

Marek also thought the pumpkins looked tasty.
Maybe I should have waited to make the pumpkin muffins until they were done carving pumpkins.

This year we decided to try using a pattern to carve the pumpkins.
Dad helped Bradley with his pumpkin.

Marek helped Daniel with the pattern on his pumpkin.

Marek also helped Eliza carve her pumpkin in a more traditional way.  It was his first time to carve a pumpkin since they don't celebrate Halloween in Poland.

Daniel with the finished product.  He loved the ghosts.

Bradley picked the witch brewing.

Eliza wasn't much help with the carving, but she did help with the apples and Carmel desert.

Marek with Eliza's pumpkin.

Margaret and Marek
Thanks for helping us carve the pumpkins.  We enjoy visiting with you.

Andy got some candles.  The kids love to light the candles every night!

Farmer Mark

We went to visit a local farmer and tour his farm.  We also got to pick out pumpkins.  This is Daniel and Eliza waiting for Farmer Mark to start the tour.

Farmer Mark telling us about the strawberry field behind us.  This is also the farm we came to in the summer to get strawberries.  They were awesome!!

This is our group.  I think there were about 27 children in attendance.

Eliza checking out the chickens.  Farmer Mark told us about the chickens and even brought one out for the kids to see.

Daniel liked the chickens a lot, he just didn't want to get too close.

Henriette was good enough to lay and egg for us while Farmer Mark was holding her.  He was so caught off guard that he lost his train of thought.  He said that is the first time he has ever had something like this happen.

Farmer Mark, Henriette and the infamous egg.

Eliza loved the chickens!

Farmer Mark explained the difference in milk/dairy cows and beef cows.  He even milked her a little and tasted it for the kids.  They thought it was pretty funny that he tasted warm milk.

Daniel and Eliza heading down to see the pig.

The pig loved the pumpkin Farmer Mark gave her.  Eliza wanted to get into the pen with her.

There were a few cotton plants.  Daniel loved it.  When Farmer Mark asked the kids what you can make out of cotton one of the kids said, "Cotton candy!"  :)

Farmer Mark also let the kids pet one of his goats.  It was a lot of fun to see the animals and enjoy the fresh air.  After the tour we picked out pumpkins.  Thanks Farmer Mark for showing us around and letting us see your animals.

Daniel with his pumpkin.

Eliza wanted to pick ALL the pumpkins.  We finally got her to decide on one.
