Mt. Airy, NC Part:1

We made it to Mt. Airy in time for dinner and a swim in the indoor pool.  We were all excited to swim until we got in the water.  Then a little of the excitement froze out of us!  We didn't stay and swim as long as we would have if the water would have been warmer.  The boys had a cannon ball competition and practiced their swimming.  Eliza is getting braver in the water all the time...and Nathan scared us all!  The boy has no fear!

Daniel, Bradley and Nathan ready to swim.

Everyone in the pool!  You can't tell by the looks on their faces, but the water was cold.

Daniel was the first in all the way!

Nathan was being a dare devil and didn't want any close supervision.
Too bad for him!

Bradley hung out on the steps for most of the time before we talked him into getting in.

Nathan helped me get in because I had to follow him as he ran to the deep end.  It is colder in the 5 ft. end than in the 3 ft. end.

Eliza after she jumped in to me.

Bradley jumping in...

Cannon ball!
My camera doesn't take very good pictures if the lighting is bad, but you get the idea.

Nathan jumping in to Mom.

Daniel doing a cannon ball.

Daniel and Bradley at the same time.

They made quite the splash!

Nathan and Dad
They were both freezing and headed back to shower first.
The next morning there was snow on the ground!  It didn't stick to the roads, but it was sticking to everything else.  After checking out of the hotel we headed to the...

Andy Griffith Museum
Mt. Airy, NC is where Andy Griffith grew up.  They patterned Mayberry after Mt. Airy.
As we walked up to the museum we met a news reporter.  He was getting some footage of the snow by the museum and asked if he could interview us.

Dad was our designated spokes person.
Getting things set up.

Getting the microphone hooked up to Andy.
Notice Eliza trying to catch a snowflake with her tongue.

He asked us where we were visiting from and why we had come to Mt. Airy.  It was a short interview and he told us we might be on the Fox 80 news that night.  We don't know for sure because we forgot to check.  :0)

As we were walking up to see the Andy Griffith statue in front of the museum Eliza slipped and fell on her bottom.  It was really cold and slushy!

Andy and Opie

This plaque was in front of the statues.

These stars were just outside the door of the museum.

We were only allowed to take pictures in the lobby before going into the museum.  We got some fun pictures, but there were a lot more pictures we would have liked to get.  After visiting the museum we were able to talk the kids into watching the Andy Griffith show.  They like it!

Bradley

Daniel doing his best Goober impression..or Gomer... I can't remember which one this one is.

I told everyone to do their best "I am getting kissed" face.  Here are the results!
Dad

Daniel

Nathan

Bradley preferred the sidecar to getting kissed.  Hopefully it will stay that way for a long time!

Nathan loved the helmet.

Eliza was sure she would be a great sidekick for Sheriff Tate!

There were a few really cool pictures.

Notice the paper he is readying in the movie is Airy News.
That is the local news paper.

There are several places around town where you can drive to see scenes from Mayberry.

These names were in the sidewalk around the Mayberry Courthouse and leading to the Mayberry Hotel.

I peeked inside the windows to the Mayberry Hotel and saw carpets and other types of flooring inside.  It is a storage place for some flooring business.

This truck was parked outside.

I think it would be fun to come back in warmer weather and take the squad car tours of "Mayberry" aka Mt. Airy, NC.

So cool! We love the Andy Griffith show around here. I love the kissing pictures! Especially that Daniel.

The swimming pictures were great. I know one or two kids kinda like that Nathan . . .

I used to watch the Andy Griffith show. I loved it and never knew it was filmed in NC. There are some things about that era I wish we could go back to. So glad your whole family got to go on a trip together. I'm still wondering if you were on the news.

Just to clarify, the show wasn't actually shot in Mt. Airy, NC. However, the set for Mayberry was based on Mt. Airy. Some of the road names, shops and I believe even a couple characters were based on actual roads, shops, and people in Mt. Airy. Now they just have some spots in town that resemble the set of Mayberry for the tourists. Did I confuse anyone yet? :0)
