Road trip Part 5: Zion's Camp and Hill Cumorah

July 12, 2015

After visiting the Sacred Grove we headed back to Zion's camp to have lunch.  This is where our Mitchell cousins camped for a couple weeks while they participated with the pageant.
We had to get special wrist bands to be able to enter Zion's camp.

The gang entering the camp ground.

Daniel had to ham it up! :)

Daniel and Melissa reserved this pavilion so we could have lunch.
Grandma and Grandpa Shirley took care of lunch.

There was a little preparation that needed to be done before we ate.

The cousins played and got reacquainted with each other.

We decided to walk over to the Mitchel campsite and see their set up.

Nathan found an ear plug on the way that he had to try out.

The Mitchel campsite.
They had to get extra boards for their site so they wouldn't get so wet when it rained.

They made the frame for the huge tarp that covered their campsite.  They had their tents up on the pallets to keep them off the wet ground.

This was their kitchen area.  They used Grandpa Shirley's cattle trailer to haul most of their stuff up there.  They built the shelves to help make an area to prepare food.

After visiting the campsite we headed back for lunch.

Pot Roast, rolls, salad and fruit!  It was super tasty!!

The kids found a bunch of tiny frogs in the grass.  They played with them for a long time!
Bradley caught a lot!

They found them in the soil around the tree as well.

Eliza loved her little frog!

Eliza named him Froggy.

Another tiny frog.
After lunch we headed to the top of the hill Cumorah to have a look around.
Some people walked up the trail and others road in the cars.

This is the hill as we walked up the trail.
I imagine this is more of what it looked like when Joseph Smith first visited it.

A look at the viewing area from the top.

It is a really steep hill!

Looking down on the valley below.
Eliza brought her frog with her in two cups.

Since the hill was so steep we tried getting some gravity defying pictures.  I wasn't at the right angle to get the picture to look right, but I did document. :)

This monument stands at the top of the hill.

This is to commemorate the Angel Moroni giving Joseph Smith the golden plates on September 22, 1827.  It also tells about the other panels on the monument.

As we were getting ready to leave Cumorah to got into Palmyra I noticed Eliza looked like she wanted to cry.  I asked her what was wrong.  She told me she was sad because she let Froggy go so he could be with his family.  She is such a sweet girl!

Eliza is a little mother at heart. Her froggy story tied the whole day together. I'm glad she let him stay with his family and I'm so glad you have so many amazing memories with Andy's family.
